Lara Jonasdottir

Herbal Practitioner, Reflexology, Massage

Lara Jonasdottir is a Medical Herbalist who offers herbal consultations in Dr Clare Apothecary in Galway alongside Dr. Dílis Clare and her clinical team.

Lara’s interest in Herbal Medicine began during her floristry training at the Agricultural University of Iceland (her home country) where she was introduced to the fascinating world of plants, their structure and uses. Following on from this, and after having worked in flower shops as a florist for a number of years, she decided to make a career change by working as a dispenser in a herbal pharmacy in Iceland. It was this that facilitated Lara’s decision to pursue a career as a Medical Herbalist and this led her to move to London to study Herbal Medicine.

Lara qualified with a BSc (Hons) in Herbal Medicine from the University of Westminster after having undertaken training in multiple subjects including herbal therapeutics, herbal materia medica, pathology, pharmacology, physiology, anatomy, phytochemistry, nutrition, research methods, clinical skills and diagnostics, and botany. She has also since gained an ITEC Holistic Massage Diploma, ITEC Reflexology Diploma, ITEC Sport Massage Diploma, as well as Indian Head and Pregnancy Massage Certificates.

Through Lara’s various studies her interest in Herbal Medicine has only grown stronger which is why she furthered her studies via the Centre for Herbal Studies 2 year online programme taught by the renowned American Herbalist, David Winston, as well as the Herbal Medicine for Women’s Health Course taught by another great American herbal practitioner Dr. Aviva Romm (MD, Midwife and a Herbalist).  Currently she is undertaking a MSc in Clinical Education in NUIG in Galway.

Lara is a member of the Irish Institute of Medical Herbalists and the National Institute of Medical Herbalists (UK) (first established in 1864), and as a member of these institutes she follows their code of ethics and is actively engaged in their activities, including regular continuing professional development training.

In addition to Lara’s practice work, she gives talks and workshops on herbal topics as well as carrying out herb walks in various locations.
